FIS is comprised of highly skilled financial investigators and forensic accountants.  Our combined background in investigations, law enforcement and accounting allows us to expertly analyze books & records, follow the money trail and chase down leads. Moreover, we have extensive experience interviewing individuals from all walks of life, as we apply proven interviewing strategies at eliciting responses and detecting deception.

Picture Michael Cohen
Michael Cohen has recently joined the practice of Financial Investigation Services as a partner where he utilizes his skills as a forensic accountant and financial investigator to conduct fraud investigations, provide litigation support services such as in matrimonial disputes, injury suits, and business acquisitions, investigate and prepare whistleblower claims and render tax controversy advisory services. Michael recently transitioned from the Internal Revenue Service after 30 years of service. Michael began his career with the IRS as a revenue agent where he audited taxpayers across the spectrum from small business owners up to large-capitalization public entities. In 2001, Michael was appointed as a special agent and trained for over 6 months at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Academy in Georgia.  After 9/11, Michael joined a multi-agency task force investigating the financial activities of suspected terrorists. Early in his career, Michael coordinated undercover stings of unethical return preparers.  Michael later served on the Department of Justice task forces investigating tax shelter crimes and bankruptcy fraud crimes. Michael closed his career with the IRS Criminal Investigation Division investigating executive officers of publicly-traded companies for a wide range of financial crimes. Michael has been an instructor in Fordham University's and Yeshiva University's graduate MSA and MST programs since 2009 teaching a wide range of accounting and tax courses including Forensic Accounting, Income Taxation, and Tax Practice & Research.  Michael earned his CFE, CPA, MBA, and MS in taxation.  Michael is the treasurer and a board member of the Mogen Safety Council, a non-profit entity formed to protect houses of worship.

FIS was founded by Neil Cohen, who served more than twenty-five years as a special agent with the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, including ten years as a supervisory agent.   During the course of Neil's career, he conducted and oversaw highly complex investigations involving corporate fraud, public corruption, organized crime, insurance fraud, identity theft, embezzlement and large-scale narcotics trafficking.  Neil was also a longtime member of the  Federal Construction Fraud Task Force, which investigated illegal business practices in the construction industry.  In addition, Neil served as a lead coordinator for a large-scale, high-profile offshore banking investigation.  Neil is a three-time recipient of the Public Service Award from the US Department of Justice for meritorious service.  Neil is a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and a federally licensed tax practitioner authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
